Newsletter | UN Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition

The “super year” for the ocean has officially kicked off with the One Ocean Summit hosted by President Macron in Brest this month. This marks the first of several vital ocean milestones this year – including Our Ocean in Palau in April, the UN Ocean Conference in June and COP 27 in Egypt in November.

The Ocean Stewardship Coalition has already hit the ground running in 2022. Our Town Hall in January brought together key actors, including Special Envoy for the Ocean Peter Thomson and the UNFCCC High Level Climate Champion, Ocean Lead, Ignace Beguin, to discuss priorities for the year ahead.

We have also launched a working group to develop the Ports Practical Guidance for the Sustainable Ocean Principles, which will be the eighth sector-specific guidance developed to date. The guidance will launch at the UN Ocean Conference.

Our recent seafood and science-based targets workshop with WWF brought together 30 stakeholders to collect input for the Seafood Sector Guide to Science Based Targets- to be released on 29 March. Please see more information on the launch event below.

The Just Transition Maritime Task Force launched at COP 26 with UN and social partners is now being operationalized to drive a people-centred approach to decarbonizing shipping.

Further, Martha Selwyn, Manager, at the UN Global Compact, had the opportunity to present our roadmap to integrate offshore renewable energy in climate-smart marine spatial planning to the International Energy Agency.

Now is the time to leverage these strong foundations and ensure that action is taken towards the UN Ocean Conference. We will be conducting an outreach campaign to mobilize signatories for the Sustainable Ocean Principles. Please find more information below on how to get involved.

The UN Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition is also pleased to be partnering on the Innovathon at the UN Ocean Conference, where students from all over the world will innovate solutions around our 5 Tipping Points for a Healthy and Productive Ocean. More information to come!

We look forward to collaborating with you during this exciting year for the ocean!

Best wishes,
Ocean Stewardship Coalition
